I can't believe it has been twelve years since we brought Nathan home. For those of you that don't know our story, I think it is time to tell it again. My wife and I always wanted to have children. It seemed like a natural thing, we would wait just long enough to get established and spend a little time as a couple before having kids. Time went by and we decided we weren't getting any younger as they say. I was travelling at the time photographing Church Directories and would be gone days at a time. Trying to have a baby for some of us isn't an easy thing. I found out that you have to be home at the right time for it to happen. Well, time went by and it didn't happen. Not to be discouraged we found a doctor and gave in-vitro a try. Giving shots to your wife everyday is not what I would call fun, but we endured. Again our hopes were dashed and nothing happened. We thought that we would give in-vitro one more try and if nothing happened then we would adopt. Sounded like a plan and away we went again, shots everyday and the stress of knowing that this is our last chance. I remember being awake at night thinking this is it, it's going to work this time, it had too. It didn't and we moved on to Chapter Two.
Adopting a child we found out is also not an easy thing. There are papers to fill out, recommendations to get and home studies to do. Endless questions about how good you are going to be as parents. It at times is a degrading process, but I know why they do it and in the end it would be worth it, right. To make a long story short we had 3 adoptions fall through, but I would like to tell you about the first and second one. The first young Lady that we found through a friend was sure she wanted to find at home for her baby and had choosen us to be the parents. She had the baby, a little girl, and we took her home after a couple of days. My wife's parents flew into town and we had a big baby shower and everyone we new was there. We named her Molly and for two nights we were very happy. On the third day the young lady called and had changed her mind and wanted Molly Back. You see in Montana the birth mother has 3 days to change her mind and this one did. It was heart-breaking.
After a little time we got a call from our lawyer who we were working with from out of town and he had a client that was pregnant. She wanted to live with a couple during her pregnancy and then give them the child after the baby was born. Sounded kinda stressful but we agreed. It went well for a while, until she started acting strange and again changed her mind. We booted her out of our house and set her up with a dear friend of ours and she stayed with her for a while. She later moved in with a family that she had met and had her baby. Again we were heart-breaken and to this day I still think it was a scam for her to get out of town and start over. We later found out that she married a local man. It seems that her prayers were answered, but not ours.
After all of this we decided it was time to give up. That it just wasn't meant to be. I bought a Miata convertible and was happy to drive around with the top down and the sun in my face. After a time we got another call from our Lawyer. This time he had an older Lady(think 29 this time), a single working mother with two kids from a previous marriage and she wanted to meet us. She was a wonderful women who knew she could not support another child and was looking for the right home. At the same time we met the birth father and all seemed to go well. We left feeling good but also new she was meeting one more couple and we weren't going to get our hopes up this time in case we weren't picked.
Twelve years ago today we got a call from the lawyer saying that she had a little boy and she had chosen us to be his parents. I can't express the joy that we felt at that moment. Our world was about to change. My wife jumped on a plane and flew down immediately to meet our son. I got to jump in the car and drive 800 miles so that we could bring him home. After 3 days we signed the legal papers and he was ours. We like all new parents researched books for the right name. We found one we liked "Nathan" meaning a gift from God.
Yes it has been twelve years, some of them trying, but all of them a gift. He calls the portrait above his "Picasso Face", but I just call it the Look. So, Happy Birthday, Nathan!!!!!! You are our beloved son forever.
Childrens photography isn't always about getting the smile. It's about capturing those looks that are only special to the Mother and Father. Those looks that the child doesn't show to everyone and that only a Mother or Father would know. The first image of the child above is one of those looks. A good child photographer will always try to capture one of these looks while still capturing the smile and the beauty for Grandma and Grandpa.
My Son has the look--it's a stare that does not appeal to anyone but me. But I Love it and it reminds me of all the ups and downs of our life together. It's a special bond and in the day and age of digital cameras sometimes we forget to print some of those monents to remind us again the we live in a wonderful world.
Sometimes when I am photographing Kids on location(which is all of the time now)you just can't stop the fun. Yes it is fun what I do. Tell me how many people you know that get to go out on a beautiful Autumn day and photograph a gorgeous young lady playing in the leaves. Not many I would guess. Life is Beautiful.
There is something special about the interaction between Sisters. Of all the Kids photography that I do they are the most fun to photograph. One is usually the serious one and the other always has a smile. Then the next time you photograph them it is the opposite. Never a dull moment, almost always a joy.
The United States is unique in that we are one of the few countries that has a tradition of High School Senior pictures. I don't know why other countries don't give this moment the importance that we do. If you think about it, it is the last time until marriage that a person gets a professional portrait done (or made if you are from the South). It is also a time where we for the most part look our best. I look back on my Senior pictures and I can still feel the hope and the excitement of graduating from High School and the feeling of looking forward to conquer the world. Although I didn't conquer the world if gives me hope every time I have the privilege in photographing a High School Senior and knowing that there are still a future for the World and it is a great one.
